My Top Indian B Schools

Nowadays every magazine or publication(from Financial Times to India Today) or website (from US News to Pagalguy) releases a B School Ranking now and then. These publications supposedly follow a very meticulous and detailed methodology and they rate various parameters from the infrastructure to the faculty to research to student life to demographics to what not. Eventually by some more complex procedure, they collate the ratings and release the overall rankings where IIPM comes first in Global Exposure in India :O

So without following any methodology and going by my gut feel ( which is like based on a market survey(to use some heavy words)of present MBA students, prospective students and general junta), I have also jumped on the bandwagon( chalti gaadi me chadhna i suppose) and have come out with the "Anupam Arya Indian B School Rankings" :P

1. IIM A (I cant dare to put any other B School above this)
2. IIM B (Logical 2nd)
3. IIM C (and Logical 3rd)
4. ISB (Fashion to put it 4th I guess given its international collaborations with Wharton, Harvard etc)
5. IIM L ( Because I doubt ppl will leave it for XL or FMS)
6. FMS (Highest ROI for an MBA - 15 Lakh package for a 40K MBA)
7. XLRI (Arguably the best HR course in Asia, and people dont "usually" leave it for K or I)
8. IIM K ( Bias over I :P. No, Seriously, half my batch had converted I and they left it to come here. Awesome campus)
9. IIM I ( Hmm :P No hard feelings. The IIM brand name matters)
10. Sp Jain ( Supposed to have a diverse batch and locational advantage)
11. NITIE (Surprising pick but its the best at what it does - Operations)
12. MDI (The foreign exchange potential is an advantage. I would have ranked it lower personally, but prospective candidates ( including me at a time) ranked it quite high)
13. IIFT ( The best in interantional trade apparently)
14. SJMSOM IIT B (Loses out on diversity, but vibrant Entrepreneurship culture)
15. MICA ( The best in advertising, ideal sex ratio and Prof Mathew - one of my favourite profteaches there :P)
16. IRMA (The best in rural management)
17. IIM S (Very young, but growing fast as the 7th IIM)
18. Jamnalal Bajaj ( Biased towards only Maharashtra Students, losing out slowly)
19. SIBM Pune ( For want of a better B School )
20. SCMHRD (It might surpass SIBM in a couple of years)
21. NMIMS (Location advantage i guess)
22. XIMB (am running out of reasons now)
23. IMT ( struggling to maintain its place)
24. DOMS IIT D ( 2nd best IIT MBA)
25. IBS hyd (the flagship ICFAI)

Just missed the list are TAPMI and Nirma

Disclaimers:
1. These are just the personal opinions of the writer who is in no way responsible for the consequences.
2. The writer is not aiming to belittle any B School and apologizes in anticipation for doing so in the process of giving his awesome reasons.

PS: Oh i forgot, Rank 1000: IIPM ( for trying to be what its not and for the founder being a pain in all the body parts)

  1. If you think from return on investment angle, FMS should rank 1 :P . I think ISB is overhyped ( consider the value addition for a 3-4 yr workex guy who has to spend Rs 17 lakhs for a one yr program ) ... rest all is ok..

  2. I am a 3-4 yr work ex guy so I am targetting to go to ISB ..... The ROI is not that bad when you consider the extra income you get in the one yr you save .... so actual spend at the end of 2 yrs is 17 lacs - 14 lacs(made in the first yr after passing out ... conservative ... as thr avg is 15) = 3 lacs ....whereas in iima you would be down by 14 lacs at the end of 2 yrs!

  3. Hi S

You have made a nice point. Just take into account that if u analyse the stats, the median is lower than the mean in B School placements. Also, last year, given its huge batch size of more than 550 students, ISB couldnt place all. But rankings shouldnt be focused only on placements too, more on the value addition.

  8. I dont think even A,B,C is as obvious as all B-school rankings point it out to be - whether you look at placements, vibrancy of culture, alumni, industry preference or whatever. But, since this is an opinion based thing (and most opinions are formed on the basis of media coverage to a B-school and how other magazines rank a B-school, which essentially means naught to me), I forgive :P

  9. lol good one shreyans.. ya after coming into contact with more ppl from A B and C in summers, perception changed a lot :| ... but as u said, this was my opinion at that point of time, based on my limited interactions and media coverage.
